Upholding Integrity: A Lesson in Ethics and Business Culture
In the world of business, values are the guiding principles that shape an organization's identity and drive its actions. For me, integrity stands as the foundation of these values - the unwavering commitment to doing what is right, even when faced with challenges. As I reflect on the early stages of my career and the core values that have led me here, the story that encapsulates the essence of integrity comes to mind.
In those formative years, I was a young tech eager to contribute and learn. It was during this time that I had the privilege of working alongside a senior figure, a colleague I'll refer to as Mr. Project Manager, or Mr. PM. His influence in the business was undeniable, and I greatly respected him. He had a habit of involving me in projects that stretched my abilities and exposed me to areas beyond my usual scope.
One particular project involved supporting a bid process. The bid was a fusion of Associate Project Management Professional gates and an engineering lifecycle model. It allowed engineering teams to engage with business, finance, and commercial processes, reflecting the maturing state of the business and the novelty of the process itself.
As the project progressed, I found myself invited to a crucial meeting, known as Gate 3, where pricing and commercial viability were discussed. When I inquired if my presence was appropriate, Mr. PM assured me that my involvement was valuable and would contribute to my growth. With newfound confidence, I joined the meeting - my first foray into the boardroom.
However, as the presentation unfolded, cracks in the process became evident. Key stakeholder content was missing, and the pressure on Mr. PM mounted. Then, a startling moment occurred. A slide presented the idea of adjusting estimates to maximize revenue based on an unnamed "Source" who allegedly knew the customer's budget. The finance director, quick to uphold principles, denounced this approach as inappropriate, emphasizing that estimates should align with technical teams' inputs and pricing policies.
The proposal was rejected, and the presentation revisited. The client presentation day arrived, and I watched as the bid I had dedicated so much effort to was showcased. But there it was again - the slide with the ominous "Source." The room fell into silence, and tension hung in the air. The client's response was furious; trust had been breached. The subsequent conversations are etched in my memory, marked by client anger and the need for damage control.
The repercussions were substantial, both financially and in terms of reputation. The cost of maintaining the client relationship was high, and every piece of work was subjected to rigorous scrutiny.
